President's Message

August 2010

Dear Friends:

Another curling season is just around the corner!  The 2010/2011 season promises to be a memorable one at FWCC. We have been busy this summer installing new, energy-efficient lighting over the ice surface. FWCC will be hosting the curling competition for the 2011 Ontario Special Olympics Winter Games in January and the Dominion Northern Ontario Men’s Championships in February.

We are proud to have received the 2010 NOCA Club Recognition Award in recognition of our efforts to develop programs and improve accessibility. FWCC was the first in Thunder Bay to offer an Instructional League, introduced Wheelchair Curling in 2005/2006 and started a Special Olympics program in 1989.

Congratulations to Morris Stoyka for being deservedly recognized by the NOCA with a Volunteer Award for all the work he does for our Club and “Morning Classes” at the Brier. Thank you to Morris and to all our volunteers for your efforts to make FWCC such a great place to enjoy the “roaring game.”  Congrats as well to FWCC’s Al Hackner on his recent nomination to the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be Sept. 25, 2010 at the Valhalla Inn. For tickets call the Sports Hall at 622-2852.

Registration Sessions will be:
Men’s/Open (now open to women curlers), Mixed and Wheelchair curling:
• Wednesday, August 25 and Thursday, August 26 - 6 to 8 pm at FWCC
• Saturday, August 28 - 10 am to 4 pm at Intercity Shopping Centre

Youth Curling (Little Rocks, Bantams, Juniors):
• Saturday, September 11 – 11 am to 2 pm at FWCC

Note that Club dues are subject to the new HST. As well, the NOCA has raised their dues to $15 per curler. If you play in multiple leagues or clubs you only need to pay this fee once per year. Lastly, there will again be a $10 levy per curler for FWCC’s elevator fund.

Should you have any questions, please call 622-5377, e-mail info@fortwilliamcurlingclub.com or visit www.fortwilliamcurlingclub.com.

See you on the ice. Good curling!

Sincerely,

Sam Barbisan
President
